The day directly following the inauguration of Donald Trump, the Women’s March on Washington protested in support of equal rights for all women. According to the Women's March organizers, Linda Sarsour, Tamika Mallory, Carmen Perez, and Bob Bland, the purpose of protesting is to “send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights.”

Protesters in the Women’s March believe that the new government run by President Trump will not only take away the rights women have currently, but will misrepresent this fraction of the population in politics, nationally and globally. The Women’s March on Washington follows five guidelines: to practice nonviolence, to use nonviolence to help justice prevail, to attack the conditions established and not the people enforcing them, to accept suffering without retaliation, and to avoid internal and external violence.

This march has been misconstrued in the media, representing these protests as repeats of the violent protests directly after the inauguration. Similar sister protests were organized around the world, including Las Vegas, in which thousands of people supported the movement from Fremont Street to Las Vegas Boulevard. Although the movement in Las Vegas did not reach the participation as the participation level of the Women’s March on Washington, it made its mark on the Las Vegas community. The Women’s March in Las Vegas was supported by dozens of local businesses, as well as by state assembly members Dina Neal, Lesley Cohen, Nelson Araujo, and Richard Carrillo.
