HIIT, also referred to as high intensity interval training, helps build muscle and burn fat fast! HIIT is a form of working out where one does a short burst of extremely intense exercise, like deadlifts with a weight bar, for example, followed by a short period of activity that is not as intense, like running in place. The workouts can usually be preformed in under 30 minutes, but times will vary depending on the participants body type and endurance level.

A recent study had a group of participants do HIIT for twenty minutes, and a second group do a steady cardio workout for thirty minutes, each group training three times a week. Weight loss was about the same for both groups, but the group that preformed HIIT had a two percent loss in body fat, with the other group losing just 0.3%. The steady group even lost about a pound of muscle but the HIIT group gained almost two pounds.

One example of a HIIT workout is tabata. Tabata is when one performs an excercise as hard and fast as they can for 20 seconds straight and rests for ten seconds. It is typically done for four minutes, exercising and resting eight times each. One can even preform the training on their own at home, doing a simple 4 minute tabata workout with 20 second intervals of jumping jacks and ten seconds of rest, for example. Some other exercises that can be preformed are jump squats, crunches, push-ups, or sit-ups.

High intensity interval training is the wave of the workout future and is a wonderful way to get in shape and stay healthy. The great thing about HIIT is that it can be done in a household setting consisting of simpler but still efficient exercises, or in a group setting at a gym with more weights and equipment. Joining a CrossFit gym or receiving help from a personal instructor are both excellent ways to practice HIIT with others.
